Writing letters all morning at “Bessie’s”. I receive 4 letters from my ad in the paper.
I am busy sorting & packing my necessities.

Friday 30 October 1914 – cloudy & rain
Raining hard
I write letters.
I visit Neate’s at 9:10 pm. Home at 10:30 pm
ǀǀ Charles Theobald leaves my company for good to join Naval Service at Esquimalt. 9 pm ǀǀ
Thursday 29 October 1914 – fine
Working on my house all day.
Charles Theobald receives a telegram from Ottawa – “To Esquimalt at once” for naval service. Telegram arrived 5:30 pm
Mrs Graham, Charles Graham & myself go to visit Reverend N.J Thompson’s Residence. The Women’s Auxiliary of St. Clements were there making comforts for the Canadian troops

Germans lose 5,000 men dead: at the crossing of the Yser in Belgium
Canadian troops are not at the front yet – still at Salisbury plain, England.
To Haswell’s in evening & had walk with my cousin
* Battle of the Yser- As the Germans pushed though Belgium, Belgian and allied troops were able to hold German troops back around the Yser river, retaining a small tract of Belgian land. They halted the German advance on October 16th and in a desperate attempt to hold the Germans back Belgian troops opened the Canal locks at Nieuwpoort on October 25th. This slowly flooded the low country where German troops were fighting and forced their retreat on October 29th. The Germans then began to focus their attack on Ypres.

Working on the addition to my house with Charles Theobald.
I receive a notice from Ottawa to the effect that I get medically examined & forward on the certificate to Ottawa when I will receive my transportation papers etc:
To Haswells in evening & broke the news to Mrs F Graham my cousin
Sunday 25 October 1914 – fine
To St. Clements Church in morning to hang flags for childrens’ day.
To Haswell’s in the afternoon & stayed for tea.
Haswell very ill – Bronchitis.
Stayed till 10:15 pm then to Church for my bunting.
Home at 11 pm
Neill called & played cards with Charles Theobald. I was away.
Saturday 24 October 1914
Charles Theobald’s reply is sent to Ottawa.
I write to Gilbert Hall at Customs House City regarding “Old Soldiers”. Mrs. F Graham & self go to Vancouver to see the “Million Dollar Mystery” at the Rex Theatre.
Home at 11:30 pm
Friday 23 October 1914 – fair
Working on house all day.
In evening took flowers to Reverend N.J Thompson’s. Called at Neats’ and then on to Haswells. Took Haswell my asthma outfit. 8 pm went for walk with Mrs Graham & at 10 pm to Reverend N.J Thompson with Mrs Graham to arrange regarding Charles Graham.
Posted letter to Reverend H.G King & Charles Graham at 11 pm. Home at 11:50 pm
Thursday 22 October 1914 – fine & later cloudy
Our first frost makes its appearance.
Charles & self working on kitchen.
To Haswell’s at night. Haswell is suffering from asthma.
Bessie receives a letter from her husband. He is to enlist tomorrow also Charles. I give advice and I leave at 10:15 pm
Neill at my house playing cards with Charles.
