Another raid by PPCLI is successful in which Lt AA McDougall has left leg shattered by a bomb.
Wednesday 6 December 1916
It rains for a change after many days of mist & fog. Enemy trench mortars busy. PPCLI conduct a raid in day light. Sniper Loptson gets praise from the General for good work.
Tuesday 5 December 1916
Bucharest has fallen this evening. The troops are dull about it. Very busy all day. – Wallis goes on leave.
*The Romanian Campaign and the Fall of Bucharest – Romania stayed neutral as the war began, but was eventually coaxed into joining the Allied side in August of 1916 by the promise of territorial claims to Transylvania after the war ended. After declaring war on Germany, Romania quickly launched attacks into Transylvania which was held by Austro-Hungarian troops. The initial attacks were successful pushing opposing forces towards Hungary and rapidly gaining ground. However Germany sent 8 divisions to reinforce the Austro-Hungarians and they were able to halt the Romanians in September 1916.
Monday 4 December 1916
Our aeroplanes display great activity over enemy lines. Many combats. One Bosch plane makes a dash out of clouds & discovers the position of a battery. Heavy anti-air gun & rifle fire fail to bring him down. Two bullets miss me by a foot & a half & bury themselves in the hard frozen earth. Enemy shells my dugout at La Targette. I move my draughting office down to Aux Rietz at Bde HQ’s a silly move but ordered by a silly spasmodic-minded [sic] officer, Capt W.
*Boche – A derogatory term for German soldiers during WWI. It comes from the French phrase tête de boche which loosely translates to the English term Numbskull.
Sunday 3 December 1916
Capt Wallis returns in evening from leave to England, full of great but empty & inapplicable ideas. Lt Wallis makes me angry at a foolish suggestion so I walk out of the office for I will not conform to his silly ideas.
Heavy shelling all day. Church service in Off mess 9:30 AM.

Friday 1 December 1916
Foggy, damp. Enemy reported concentrating his troops so we stand to arms all night – in expectation. Nothing happens except that he shells our front lines severely.
A Canadian M.P. visits our trenches dressed in khaki.
Heavy trench mortar & shell fire on our trenches. L/c White goes to Mont St Eloy. General Lipsett arrives at Bde advanced HQ from Div.
Thursday 30 November 1916
Bde Major moves into a “safety first” dugout. Foggy & cold. Enemy strafe our resistance line with heavy trench mortars & rifle grenades. An American Colonel visits the trenches. A parade is held in Mont St Eloy for the distribution of Medal ribbons.
