Rasmussen &amp; 12 OR [entered] enemy\u2019s line under a Stokes barrage. Raid successful.\u00a0 A number of dugouts being bombed.\u00a0 Many casualities inflicted.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Enemy\u2019s post destroyed and two prisoners brought in.\u00a0 Our casualties nil.\u00a0 Weather frosty with snow.\u00a0 Our Stokes fire 666 rounds.<\/p>\n<p><em>*OR is an acronym for Other Ranks<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>*Frederick Wilfred Scott Stokes \u2013 who later became Sir Wilfred Stokes KBE \u2013 designed the mortar in January 1915. The Stokes mortar was a simple weapon, consisting of a <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smoothbore\"><em>smoothbore<\/em><\/a><em> metal tube fixed to a base plate (to absorb recoil) with a lightweight <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bipod\"><em>bipod<\/em><\/a><em> mount. When a mortar bomb was dropped into the tube, an impact sensitive <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Percussion_cap#Primers\"><em>primer<\/em><\/a><em> in the base of the bomb would make contact with a firing pin at the base of the tube, and detonate, firing the bomb towards the target. Range was determined by the amount of propellant charge used and the angle of the barrel.
