‘We are grateful to have such a committed, energetic and passionate group of volunteers and Friends Society members. We really value the contribution they make and want to say a massive thanks to them during National Volunteer Week.’
Wes Wenhardt, Director, North Vancouver Museum and Archives
It’s National Volunteer Week, so we want to say THANK YOU to all our volunteers who, although not as visible right now, are supporting us behind the scenes.
Many of our volunteers are busy, researching, transcribing, developing program materials, and assisting with archives and exhibits. Some of our volunteers are even building program resources for the new museum including an activity cart and a working model of Streetcar 153.
Alongside this, our Friends Society members continue to be strong community advocates for the museum with our communities and networks. We are a small organization and could not operate without the support we get from all our volunteers.
“Being a volunteer connected me to the North Shore’s heritage and allowed me to bring that heritage to others. It definitely made me feel like a part of the community, too. I really enjoyed marching in the North Shore Canada Day Parade and getting the chance to show off the Streetcar. I hadn’t marched in that thing since I left the North Shore Youth Band and it was nice to be a participant in it again” –Bryan Wood, Previous volunteer, NVMA
Typically, the spring and summer months are times when we really rely on volunteers, particularly The NVMA Friends Society. With community events like Lynn Valley Day, Canada Day, Kids in the Hall and the Shipyards Festival our Friends Society are kept very busy.
Planning events, prepping materials, transporting tents, chairs, and exhibits; everyone pulls together to make these events a success. Our summer activities are great fun and would never happen without the dedicated work of our Friends Society and volunteers.
Of course, things are very different this year. With many events cancelled, we are reflecting on our past work while planning for the future. As we approach the opening of the new museum later in 2020, we’ll be recruiting a new group of volunteers. If you want to learn more about volunteering with NVMA, please email: nvmavolunteers@dnv.org
“Working as a volunteer with NVMA is a privilege, to know such great people with big hearts. I have learned a lot from NVMA members; cooperation, hard work with no expectations, spending time even during the weekend, introducing something useful and new to the community like a museum, to get know people more, interact with different people. I am very proud to be part of NVMA.” –Mina Mashhour, Current Volunteer, NVMA
In light of this, National Volunteer Week is a great time to thank our current volunteers for all their hard work up to this point!
We rely on contributions, monthly or one-time gifts, to help MONOVA safeguard and expand our community’s archival and museum collections, build learning experiences and inspire future generations.
Donations are accepted through the Friends of the North Vancouver Museum & Archives Society, Registered Charity No. 89031 1772 RR0001.

We respectfully acknowledge that MONOVA: Museum and Archives of North Vancouver is located on the traditional lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations, whose ancestors have lived here for countless generations. We are grateful for the opportunity to live, work and learn with them on unceded Coast Salish Territory.
