Mary Wells Anderson

Biography

Mary Wells Anderson was a committed and experienced mountaineer. Having climbed in various parts of the world, she dedicated her efforts towards increasing access to British Columbia’s mountains. She was known for her careful preparedness, her assistance in search and rescue operations, and her physical endurance. On a trip in the Monashees her companions noted that “her stamina, as she packed a large scarlet pack-board over half her own weight, put us all to shame.”

In her photography, Wells Anderson portrays this athleticism, whether in the leap across a crevasse, in the carved turn of a downhill skier, or in the taut body of a climber on the rope.
