The First Rope
The first rope of a mountaineering party took lunch, and a picture, in the summer of 1924 as they ascended a peak near Mount Fitzsimmons. Their hats and the white zinc oxide on their faces provided protection from the sun. High wool socks and sturdy boots are key parts of their garb – note the nails on the edge of the boot soles of the woman to the left.
