Wagons to Garibaldi
The mountaineers who achieved the first ascent Mount Garibaldi in 1907 used virtually every mode of transportation to reach their first destination. From Vancouver, they travelled onboard the steamer Britannia to the landing at Newport, now called Squamish. With their gear deposited in horse-drawn wagons, the climbers then traveled 20 kilometers to the Cheekye River, then followed the riverbed by “shank’s pony” (on foot) to establish the base camp.
