Keeping it Light
Cooking and food have always presented mountaineers with a dilemma. The physical strain of climbing can expend three or four times the calories of normal daily activity. A well-fed climber is less likely to suffer ill-effects from heat, cold or fatigue. But food, cooking and eating equipment are heavy to carry. Modern gear is lightweight, compact, and well-designed with these factors in mind. Freeze-dried foods are light, compact, quick and easy to prepare.
