Nellie Chapman’s 1910 Gear
Nellie Chapman was quite an experienced climber by 1910, when photographed by her husband. She carries a hemp rope slung over her shoulder, as well as an ice axe. The hat, netting and long gloves protected her from sun and insects; the puttees protected her lower legs. The wool pants differed from the bloomers worn by most female climbers of the day.
