Boots, Bloomers and Puttees

Two of the women in this group of mountaineers pictured in 1910 wear long skirts and boots, the other two wear bloomers and puttees. The puttees, also worn by the men, prevented water from getting into the boots when crossing streams, and protected the legs from snags and bushes. Climbing boots were made by an Icelander in Vancouver, who claimed to have made them for mountaineers in Europe. The finished product, studded with edge nails from England, was quite practical, but heavy.
