Nine Pounds of Porridge

"You allow yourself so many pounds per day per person … the menu is very easy. You can’t take fresh meat or anything because you’d no way of keeping it like that. I dried some one year but ugh! It wasn’t what it was cracked up to be – because I didn’t have the proper method I suppose. So we just had ham and beans and rice and barley and cheese, those were the staples – and porridge, of course. But with porridge it was easy because there are several different kinds and if you were going to have say, nine pounds of porridge, I’d have three different kinds so that you could have a variety of food."*
