Flying Boat
Small float planes and flying boats that could land on alpine lakes dramatically changed mountaineering. No longer was it necessary for climbers to haul their gear by boat, train, horse or foot to base camps. A trip from Vancouver to the top of Mount Garibaldi, which previously took many days, now could be done in a day. A small amphibious flying boat is shown here, in 1947, on Garibaldi Lake, with a climbing party.
