Mountains Blue, Green, and Brown

In the prime of her career, Canadian painter Emily Carr, renowned for her portrayals of totem poles and First Nations’ villages, came under the spell of the mountain landscape.

Travelling in the coast mountains by rail in May 1933, she wrote:

“... my eye all agog to absorb scenery. Mountains towering – snow mountains, blue mountains, green mountains, brown mountains, tree-covered, barren rock, cruel mountains with awful waterfalls, and chasms and avalanches, tender mountains all shining, spiritual peaks way up among the clouds.” Artwork details
