Rowing and Bailing Bill

The “Bill Wheatley” was the second boat mountaineers built to carry people and supplies across Garibaldi Lake during their annual summer camps. The first, “Alpine Beauty,” was by 1920 too decrepit, so they packed boards up to the lake to assemble a new vessel. However, the rowboat’s namesake, Bill, neglected to bring caulking – a torn up blouse wedged in the seams was a stop-gap. Six people at a time, two rowing and four bailing, provided transport from Driftwood Bay to Lakeside Camp.
