Surveying Mountain Peaks
Early mountaineers, some of them surveyors, made considerable effort to map mountains in popular areas. The man in front used a plane table, mounted on a tripod, to record the direction of other peaks in the area; he determined elevations with an aneroid barometer. The men behind are constructing a cairn. Recordings from this “station” would be triangulated with others to produce a final map.
