Fred Williams
It’s the dirty thirties, and you’ve got no money. What do you do for fun? Fred Williams’ solution was to make his own – literally. Skis? Cut down a tree, shape the boards with your own hands. Poles? Bamboo didn’t cost much, and for the baskets – found cane that had dropped from a sweeper’s brushes was perfect. When a packboard was needed, well, he recycled those same skis to fashion the frame.
