Leave Poperinghe at 6:18 am, arrive @ Boulogne 1:30. Boat (Victoria) does not leave until 4 PM. Go into Boulogne & have dinner. Back to boat and arrive at Folkestone 5:45.
Train for London leaves @ 6 PM arrive London @ 8:10 PM. Catch train for Stafford @ 8:50, arr Stafford @ 12 midnight.

At Ouderdom near Ypres. Have orders to put up Corporal’s Stripes. 42nd Bn lose 6 killed and 30 wounded by large shell dropping into Cavalry Bks. Ypres a Taube flies over our camp & our anti-craft guns drive it off @ 9 PM but not before it drops bombs near us damn him.

Brigade Major Foster is wounded at Steenvoorde by piece of trench mortar bomb (in thigh, serious). Capt MacDonald acts in his capacity & I am acting as the Brigade Intelligence Officer pro temp.

I’m [“mainie”?] officer making maps. The Villagers call for their relief money which is given out to them by the town clerk who cries out their peculiar (to us) names from a list.

Wednesday 26 July 1916 – fair
To Cassel on a bike. Passed Mount des Recolets. Beautiful scenery. Had tea @ café. Visited Porte de Dunkerque and Casino on top of the hill. Lovely view from here of the surrounding country. Casino used as a wireless station. A monument is erected in memory of the battles which were fought in the vicinity for the liberation of France, etc. Philip bro’ to king of France & away back to 1400. Visit the Church. Very old. Bells outside the tower. Return to Steenvoorde 6 PM.
