Wednesday 23 February 1916

Up @ 7:30 to have breakfast. To Knights at 10 am. Leave Seagrave at 12:30 noon for Rothley with Kathleen. Call on Marsdens, Inglesants & Looms. Arr. Rothley 5 PM, took train for Derby @ Sileby 5:52, arr. Derby 6:30 (change at Trent) met by Nelson MacKay. In evening to Pollard with MacKay family. Most enjoyable time.

Tuesday 29 June 1915 – showers

Appeared before eye specialist and pronounced unfit for service left eye no use and right eye defective.
Wrote letters to Nurse Smith, Harry, Ernest and “Seagrave”.

Sunday 27 June 1915 – showers

Took the girls (cousins) out for a walk in morning to Victoria Park. Had dinner at Aunts and then went to see John, Mrs. and Almina Draycot of Devana Road. Stayed to tea and left for Seagrave at 7 pm.
Arrived Seagrave at 9 pm after calling at Sharp’s Looms and Inglesants.
Said various goodbyes.
Left bike at Walkins and camera at Joe Draycots.

Thursday 24 June 1915 – cloudy

Left Seagrave for Stafford on bicycle at 10 am and arrived at Stafford at 3:45 pm. 55 miles journey and very hilly.
To Dr Millars at 6 pm and had chat with Nurse Smith. At 8:30 pm to Mrs. Smith’s house and stayed til 3 am. Chatting all the time.
(Doctor Millar recommends me for one months’ leave).

Wednesday 23 June 1915 – fine

Left Seagrave at 9:30 am for Ragdale. Went thro’ Old Hall there once owned by Lord Ferrers. Went thro the Church which is attached to Seagrave Living. To Melton Mowbray and had a tea there then on to Thorpe Arnold and looked thro’ Registers. On to Frisby and looked thro’ Registers with Vicar’s wife, Mrs Wright. Also the Registers of Kirby Bellars. Onto Syston and called at Preston and Parson. Came to Seagrave with Maud and May who had been to Syston.

Tuesday 22 June 1915 – fine

To Sileby and Rothly. Called on Draycots there and left photo. Called at Cassington and took photos of effigy and Kitcheners tomb. Entertained by the Vicar. Took photos of Rectory Garden. Back to Seagrave at 1 pm.
To afternoon tea at the Knight family. Took photos.

Monday 21 June 1915 – fine

Left Seagrave at 9:30am. Went to Sileby, Cassington, Leicester to see Aunt Louise. Left Leicester at 12 noon for Thurnby Court. Went thro’ the grounds and the large mansion which was built by Stonewall Jackson’s brother but is now unoccupied. Left here for Lowesby and Tilton. Saw Parson and wife. Inspected interior Church Lowesby. Arrived at Seagrave at 5:30 pm. Passed thro’ Barsby, Saldesby, South Croyton, Rearsby and Thrussington.


*Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was a confederate general in the American Civil war, famed for his tactical skills in many of the battles he commanded during the Civil War. The nickname Stonewall was given to Jackson at the First Battle of Bull Run where another General described him as “standing like a stone wall” during the battle.
