Monday 27 July 1914 – fine & warm

Mr. Little leaves for England.
To work on Keith Road School all day.
Feel the effects of mushroom poisoning yet. Mrs & Miss Wagstaffe of Burnaby pay a surprise visit. I entertain best possible way. Give them bouquet of flowers from the garden. They came at 6 pm & left at 7:30 pm. Miss Mabel sustains a severe injury to her left hand. I go to town with them & have supper. They leave for Burnaby at 9 pm. I arrive home at 11 pm

Sunday 26 July 1914 – showers & cold wind

Finishing off the Verandah in morning. John Neats calls at 4 pm. I go to Church with John Neat in evening. Congregation are very reticent, cold & distant. An unsociable lot. At 9 pm to Neat’s Residence & stayed till 10:15 pm.

Saturday 25 July 1914 – Rain till noon

Raining in morning.

Then time Charles & me go to Vancouver at 10 am. I call at Municipal Hall & draw $7.50 for wages from work on Keith Road School. To Rex & Columbia Theatre at 2 & 3 pm. Call at Fashion Crafts & get trousers altered. Also call at Quirt & run up to Theobald’s for tea. Home again at 10:45 pm after making purchases of books etc.

Friday 24 July 1914 – cloudy and no rain

Working on Keith Rd School. I feel very ill. Run down. To Shiells in evening & made purchase of goods. He leaves on Thursday for Calgary.

Thursday 23 July 1914 – very hot

Working on Keith Rd School but feeling ill. Scots win the King’s Prize of the Royal at Bisley. Australians win the MacKinnon Cup.


 *The Bisley meeting is a rifle shooting competition held by the National Rifle Association of the UK. Originally the competition took place in Wimbledon but was moved to Bisley in 1890. There were both individual and team shooting events during the Bisley meeting. A variety of shooting competitions still take place at Bisley today. Draycott was himself a skilled competitive marksman, and followed the sport with interest.

Working on Keith Road.

Fixing creek. Making Plank Bottom. Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Neill take a walk in my garden. To Shiells in evening. Buying odds & ends. He leaves to Calgary Monday.

Tuesday 21 July 1914 – very hot

Working on Keith Road. Charles is still out of work. In evening I do a little finishing off the Verandah of my first house. I have over a hundred cabbages planted and all doing well. Had new potatoes for over a fortnight. Flowers blooming for a month.

Monday 20 July 1914 – fine & later cloudy & rain

At work on school grounds Keith Road. Gale is still blowing out in the Gulf. Receive a letter from Mrs. Graham.

I buy furniture from Mrs. Neill for $25.00.

Sunday 19 July 914 – cloudy & fine no rain

Off to Whyte Cliffs on P.G.E [Ry] for the day. Arrive at Horseshoe Bay, Whyte Cliff at 12.30 pm. Went diving & bathing in the Bay. Had lovely day. Sun hot but cold wind and gale blowing on the Gulf. Many boats are stranded on the beaches. High and dry. John Neat, Charles Theobald & self formed party. – Fare 50c return. Met Ferne Quirt & Miss Edith Bores at Horseshoe Bay. Home 9:20
