Saturday 22 August 1914 – fine

To work on Keith Road School in morning. In afternoon I to Vancouver & met Hugh Neill at the Ferry Wharf. “We go to the C.P.R. Depot & see the 72nd Highland Regiment off to the war. (via Valcartier, Quebec) They left at 3:30 pm.” To Quirt’s & chat awhile. I leave Hugh at 5:30 pm & go to Theobald’s, where I have late dinner. Afterwards to Quirt’s (7:30 pm). Myrtle is not at home. I say good-bye to Mrs. & children & leave for Rex Theatre. Home to Lynn Valley at 10 pm.


*The 72nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, were part of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI. They were mobilized out of Vancouver, and fought in France and Flanders though the entirety of WWI.

At work on Keith Road School
Honorable Mr Young Minister of Education opens the school.

In evening to choir practice
Presented bouquet of flowers to Mr. N.J Thompson

Thursday 20 August 1914 – fine

No papers as yet. I work on house in morning.

Belgians [sic., should read Germans] occupy Brussels. In evening 8 pm to St. Clements Hall to attend Congregational meeting. Very interesting & some good business done.

Wednesday 19 August 1914 – very hot

My embarkation papers have not arrived. I work on house in morning. At 2:30 pm take car for Hollyburn, West Vancouver to join St. Clements Annual picnic. Arrive at 4:30 pm.
Mr. Callow & self go in for a bathe. All had a good time & home at 8:30 pm. I to Neat’s, then home at 10:30 pm.

To work on Keith Road Schools but do not start work owing to Mr. ____ getting his papers for embarking to the war. I expect mine. Mr Pearce receives his papers (19/Wednesday) but none for me.

Sunday 16 August 1914 – dull & showery

At Quirts 9 am. To Cambie St. grounds to see the militia assemble for Church Parade attended by Mrs Quirt. Home to Quirt’s at 10:30 am. I go to Methodist Church with Mr Quirt. Myrtle is away at Ocean Bay. Leave Quirt’s at 3 pm for Lynn Valley. At Neat’s for supper. In evening I to Church. Reverend Hooper preaches. Sermon on “memory”. Back to Neat’s & home at 10

8:30 pm.

Working ½ day Keith Road Schools

Sent papers to Mrs. Graham.

Steamer Ancon is the 1st vessel to pass thro’ Panama Canal from Atlantic to Pacific. The Ancon is owned by the US Government.

French advance in Northern Alsace


*SS Ancon- The first ship to officially sail through the Panama Canal during the canal’s opening ceremony. The Ancon was later used at the end of WWI to transport American troops back to the US.

Friday 14 August 1914 – very hot

Working on Schools Keith Road. Hugh Neill calls in evening & has chat – feels lonely

The heat is very intense.

German Cruiser Leipzig is outside Cape Flattery. HMS Rainbow is in Esquimalt, also Shearwater & Algerine.


*HMS Rainbow –An Apollo-class cruiser originally built for Great Britain’s Royal Navy but was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1910. The Rainbow was brought into Vancouver to assist with the Komagata Maru incident; it also patrolled the west cost of North America during WWI.

Thursday 13 August1914 – very hot

Working at Keith Road Schools. Receive letter from Ernest of Gosport. Very little news from the scene of War. But Germany is getting the worst of it. England has over 50 prize vessels i.e merchantmen

John Neat calls.
