Thursday 22 October 1914 – fine & later cloudy

Our first frost makes its appearance.
Charles & self working on kitchen.
To Haswell’s at night. Haswell is suffering from asthma.
Bessie receives a letter from her husband. He is to enlist tomorrow also Charles. I give advice and I leave at 10:15 pm
Neill at my house playing cards with Charles.

I receive letter from Brother Charles. He has enlisted in Lord Kitchener’s Army with Aviation Corps.
Charles Theobald receives no letter from Esquimalt yet.
Neill calls & plays card with Charles & self

I go to Haswell’s at 6 pm & to Mrs & Mr Nye’s at 7:45 pm: entertained
Charles Graham & his father go to Victoria on the midnight boat.

Monday 19 October 1914 – rain

Charles Theobald & self put up framework of kitchen. Charles Graham goes to Vancouver. Mr Froggatt calls & I pay him $2.00 regarding Province Newspaper subscription. Mrs Graham calls at 4:30 pm & leaves message for Charles Germyn. Germans are retreating (30 miles)

Sunday 18 October – rain

Lots of callers during the day. Messrs Neill, Jack Neat, Shiells & Mr. J.W. Thompson of Vancouver, etc.
To Haswell’s for supper at 5 pm with Charles Graham. Stayed till 10:30 pm. Haswell sick.

Saturday 17 October 1914 – rain

Mrs Graham goes to meet Mrs & Charles Graham @ Grand Trunk Pacific Wharf 6:30 pm
Mrs F Graham stays in Vancouver at the Hotel Strathcona
British Cruiser “Undaunted” sinks 4 German Destroyers off Dutch Coast.
Left Lynn Valley for Vancouver at 4 pm. After calling for Mrs Graham at Haswell’s Mrs Graham gets a telegram from Charles & Mrs F Graham saying they will arrive on “Prince George” at Vancouver 6:30 pm. Mrs Graham, Charles Theobald & self go to the theatre 5 pm till 6:15 pm. Home at 8:30 pm.


*The Battle of Texel – A British Light Cruiser, the HMS Undaunted and 4 destroyers encountered a flotilla of 4 German Torpedo boats off the Dutch Island of Texel. The German ships were on their way to mine British shipping lanes. The British squadron was able to destroy the entire German Flotilla, and took very little damage in the process.

Wednesday 14 October 1914 – fair & warm

Working all day at Keith Road School
I quit the work there for good.
To Haswell’s in evening
Stayed 9:30 pm. Mr Callow there also.
Get reply from Militia at Ottawa but no satisfaction to me

Build foundation for addition to 1st House.
Working till 4:30 pm.
To Reverend N.J. Thompson’s residence in evening & stayed till 11:30 pm.
Got to know important news. I give cut flowers to Mrs Thompson and Esdaile
