Wednesday 15 July1914 – windy & fine

Printing photos in morning for Shiells and self.

To Quirt’s to fulfill promise at 3:50 pm. I cannot go to beach, feeling unwell. Return home at 5 pm. Met John Neat at Wharf & walk with him along sea front to Indian Mission.

Sunday 12 July 1914 – clouds

Up at 9 am inspecting the garden. Out picking wild raspberries with Mr. A. Wagstaffe & boys & Mr. Nutt of New Westminster. Home again at 2 pm and had dinner. Invited down to Neat’s for evening dinner. All the Wagstaffe family & self. Had pleasant time & left for home at 9:30 pm arrive in Lynn Valley 11 pm.

Saturday 11 July1914 – cloud & sunny

At work on Keith Road School till 12 noon. Wrote letter to cousin Bessie Graham, Ireland. Orangemen celebrate at Victoria. To Burnaby in afternoon, left at 3:30 pm. Arrived (after visiting Quirt’s and Theobald’s in Vancouver) at 9:30 pm. Stayed all night, Arthur Junior not at home.


*Orangemen–A protestant fraternal group that organizes community and political activities. “Orangemen’s day” aka “The Twelfth,” is holiday commemorating the Glorious Revolution (1688) and is celebrated on July 12th each year in Canada by the Orangemen. On the eve of the Orangeman’s day large bonfires are often lit to celebrate.

Thursday 9 July1914 – very hot– very hot

Commenced work at the Keith Road. Paid Barker for groceries $22.30.

Changed cheque for $25.75 from Women’s Auxiliary of St. Clement’s Church. Letter from Mrs. Graham on board Prince Albert at Prince Rupert. Planting out cabbages.

3rd anniversary of Death of Walter Draycott of Seagrave. age 49 years.

Finishing off the Verandah and shingling the roof. Mr. Reid, Architect calls & asks me to do some work for him. I consent.

To Church at night & paint table in Vestry.

Tuesday 7 July 1914 – very hot

Putting on Verandah to my house. To church in evening & assist Mrs. Arnott. Freddie Welsh beat Richie in Light Weight Championship of World (20 rounds)


* Frederick Hall Thomas fought Willie Ritchie to be named the Lightweight Boxing Champion of the World. The fight originally was supposed to take place in Vancouver in September of 1914 but was moved to London, England.
