Where the Lions Are

In 1889, Chief Joe Capilano guided a group of non-native hunters from Vancouver into the nearby mountains. They tracked a herd of mountain goats only to find themselves on the summit of West Lion peak, thereby accidentally achieving its first recorded ascent. John Latta and his two brothers made the first recorded climb to the top of the East Lion in 1903. Hearing that climbers often used ropes, they packed one along - but found they had no idea how to use it.
