Mountaineer Troops

This photograph dates to the 1940s; other details are sketchy. The clothing worn and the gear carried by the men suggest they were engaged in a serious undertaking. During the summer of 1943, two companies of Canadian troops received training and practice at Yoho National Park in mountaineering skills, including rock climbing, snow craft, bivouacking and rescue. Many of the 25 course instructors were volunteers, experienced mountaineers from the Alpine Club of Canada.
