The Aided Way
Technical advances in climbing gear and techniques opened up new possibilities and challenges. Some climbers embraced the developments, while others felt that the upcoming breed relied too much on their gadgets and aids, such as pitons, carabiners and synthetic ropes. They mourned the passing of “pure” climbing. Arnold Shives is shown climbing on Tombstone Tower in 1961.
