Manatee Centennial

Canada’s 1967 centennial celebrations motivated mountaineering groups to organize commemorative expeditions. One party undertook a ski mountaineering trip into the previously unclimbed Manatee Group. A ski plane dropped the group off on a snow saddle at 2100 meters, where all hands promptly excavated a snow cave for shelter. The cave, whose entrance is pictured, provided snug refuge for seven people for three days while a storm raged outside. When good weather prevailed, party members successfully scaled many of the area’s major peaks.
