Climbers Camps

Early on, mountaineers organized summer camps. People pooled their efforts to get to more remote locations, establish a base camp, then spend days climbing peaks in the vicinity. People enjoyed the social aspects of the camps, but the climbing was serious. This photograph from a 1911 summer camp shows a party ascending rocks on Castle Towers Mountain.
