First Woman Summits

she dropped in the crevasse and jerked the unprepared man above her from his footholds. We four on the other rope watched helplessly while my wife unaided braced herself to hold the double weight. Conrad snatched in the slack frantically, knowing he could not possibly check the three if they fell together any distance. But my wife held them and the second man regained the footholds before Conrad took in all the rope.*

The group eventually reached the top, Phyllis Munday becoming the first woman to step onto the Robson summit. This photograph shows the Alpine Club of Canada members who made successful ascents of Mount Robson in 1924; Don and Phyllis Munday are in the front row on the left. Back
