They wear tailored dark blue skirts, button-down army-style shirts, broad-brimmed cotton hats, lanyards, neckties, badges and belts. The uniforms were designed to reflect the dress standards of the day with little regard for functionality. The uniforms must have been hot and cumbersome, and the flat-soled, low-heeled shoes not very practical for mountain climbing. Though only sixteen at the time of this photograph, Phyllis was already experienced in the outdoors, and later developed into one of Canada’s most famed mountaineers. Back
